Voice AI startup Subtle launched a new pair of wireless earbuds designed to improve voice clarity during calls and provide more accurate transcriptions for voice notes. The company unveiled the earbuds ahead of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, with plans to begin shipping them in the U.S. within the next few months.
The earbuds, priced at $199, will include a year-long subscription to Subtle's iOS and Mac application. This app will enable users to create voice notes or interact with AI without manual input. Subtle said its custom chip technology allows the earbuds to wake a locked iPhone.
Subtle is positioning its new product as a competitor to AI-powered voice dictation applications such as Wispr Flow, Willow, Monologue, and Superwhisper. The company claims its earbuds will allow users to dictate in any application and deliver five times fewer errors compared to AirPods Pro 3 paired with OpenAI's transcription model.
In a demonstration observed by TechCrunch, the voice buds effectively captured audio in environments with significant background noise. The earbuds also accurately transcribed a voice note recorded by Subtle's co-founder.
Subtle's focus is on creating voice isolation models that enhance computer understanding in noisy environments. The new earbuds represent an extension of this technology into a consumer product. The company is betting that its custom chip and integration with its proprietary software will offer a superior voice dictation experience compared to existing solutions.
