A sushi entrepreneur, Kiyoshi Kimura, known as the "Tuna King," set a new record at Tokyo's main fish market, paying 510.3 million yen (£2.4 million) for a giant bluefin tuna. The purchase occurred at a prestigious auction, marking the highest price since comparable data collection began in 1999.

The 243kg (536lbs) bluefin, caught off the coast of northern Japan, commanded a significantly higher price than the previous record of 333.6 million yen paid in 2019 for a 278kg specimen. Kimura expressed surprise at the soaring price, stating he had anticipated a lower cost. He intends to serve the tuna at his restaurant chain, turning it into sushi rolls priced at approximately £2.40 each.
