Trump Warns New Venezuelan Leader as Maduro Faces US Court
Former U.S. President Donald Trump warned Venezuela's new leader, Delcy Rodríguez, that she could face severe consequences if she did not "do what's right," as deposed President Nicolás Maduro was scheduled to appear in a New York court on Monday to face drug trafficking and weapons offenses. The warning and court appearance further escalated tensions between the United States and Venezuela, drawing international scrutiny to the situation.
Trump's comments, made to US magazine The Atlantic, came as Rodríguez, who previously served as Maduro's vice president, offered a conciliatory tone at her first cabinet meeting on Sunday. She extended an invitation to the U.S. government to collaborate with Venezuela on an agenda of cooperation. "We invite the US government to collaborate with us on an agenda of co-operation," said Rodríguez.
Maduro is accused by the U.S. of running a "narco-terrorist" regime, a claim he denies. The charges against him include drug trafficking and weapons offenses. The situation has raised concerns about potential U.S. intervention and its impact on Venezuelan sovereignty, reflecting broader debates on foreign policy and international law within the global community.
