Claire's, known for its accessories popular among tweens, has 154 stores and 1,355 employees. The Original Factory Shop operates 140 stores with 1,220 staff members. The administration process is intended to provide both retailers with the necessary breathing room to find new buyers.
Modella Capital acquired Claire's in September, shortly after its previous collapse into administration. That earlier insolvency resulted in approximately 1,000 job losses and the closure of 145 stores. The investment firm has owned The Original Factory Shop since early last year.
According to Modella, the decision to place the retailers into administration was difficult. The firm stated that it had "worked intensively in an effort to save both businesses," but ultimately, these efforts proved insufficient.
The administration of Claire's and The Original Factory Shop highlights the ongoing challenges faced by brick-and-mortar retailers in a rapidly evolving market. The rise of e-commerce, changing consumer preferences, and broader economic pressures have created a difficult environment for many high street businesses. The future of both retailers will depend on the success of the administration process in attracting new investment and developing sustainable business models.
