President Volodymyr Zelensky replaced a key figure in Ukraine's security apparatus, nominating Maj-Gen Yevhenii Khmara as acting head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), replacing the influential Vasyl Malyuk. The SBU is primarily responsible for internal security and counter-intelligence, and since the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022, it has also been involved in operations within Russia.
Malyuk, who had led the SBU since 2022, became known for overseeing successful operations against Russia and for purging the agency of alleged Russian double agents, according to reports. The reshuffle is the latest in a series of leadership changes made by Zelensky since the start of the war.
Malyuk's reputation was solidified after he coordinated the "Spider Web" attack last June, in which more than 100 Ukrainian drones struck air bases deep inside Russian territory. Khmara, his replacement, was also involved in the preparation of that operation. Maj-Gen Khmara has battlefield experience fighting the Russians in the occupied region of Donetsk.
The Security Service of Ukraine has played a crucial role in the conflict, focusing on counter-intelligence and internal security. Its involvement in assassinations and sabotage attacks inside Russia highlights the complex and multifaceted nature of the ongoing war. The agency's operations are vital to Ukraine's defense strategy, aiming to disrupt Russian military capabilities and undermine their operations.
