Intel is developing a dedicated chip and platform for handheld gaming devices, announced Monday at CES by Daniel Rogers, Intel vice president and general manager of PC products. The new platform will encompass both hardware and software components.
The platform will be based on Intel's Core Series 3 processors, known as Panther Lake, which were initially unveiled last year and are now being integrated into various PCs. According to reporting from IGN, confirmed by TechCrunch, this future platform will feature a chip specifically designed for handheld gaming. These Panther Lake chips represent Intel's first utilization of its 18A manufacturing process, which commenced production in 2025.
Intel's move into the handheld gaming space marks a significant development, particularly given AMD's current dominance in the market. AMD also unveiled a new processor at CES, the AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D, designed for gaming PCs, along with advancements in ray tracing and graphics technologies.
Intel has a long history in the gaming industry, having produced chips for gaming PCs since the 1990s. The company expanded its focus on gaming in 2022 with the introduction of its Intel Arc GPUs. The development of a dedicated handheld gaming platform signals a deeper commitment to the gaming market.
The specifics of the handheld gaming device, including its potential release date and pricing, remain undisclosed. Further details are expected to emerge as Intel progresses with the development of the Panther Lake chips and the associated platform.
