President Volodymyr Zelensky replaced a key figure in Ukraine's security apparatus, removing Vasyl Malyuk from his position as head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and nominating Maj-Gen Yevhenii Khmara as acting head. The SBU, primarily responsible for internal security and counter-intelligence, has also been involved in operations within Russia since the full-scale invasion in 2022.
Malyuk, who had led the SBU since 2022, became known for his role in overseeing operations against Russia and for efforts to remove alleged Russian double agents from the agency, according to reports. Khmara, his replacement, has battlefield experience fighting the Russians in the occupied region of Donetsk.
The reshuffle is the latest in a series of leadership changes made by Zelensky since the beginning of the war. Malyuk's name gained prominence in Ukraine after he co-ordinated the "Spider Web" attack last June, in which more than 100 Ukrainian drones struck air bases inside Russian territory. Sources indicate that Khmara was also involved in the preparation of that operation.
The SBU's role has expanded significantly since the start of the war, taking on responsibilities beyond its traditional focus on internal security. This includes conducting assassinations and sabotage attacks within Russia, reflecting the evolving nature of the conflict and the challenges of maintaining national security in wartime.
The reasons behind Malyuk's replacement were not immediately clear. The move comes at a critical time in the conflict, as Ukraine continues to defend itself against Russian aggression and seeks to maintain stability within its borders. The appointment of Khmara suggests a desire for leadership with battlefield experience. The situation remains fluid, and further developments are expected as Khmara assumes his new role and the SBU continues its operations.
