Lenovo unveiled two laptops with rollable OLED screens at CES this year, including a gaming laptop concept that expands horizontally. The Legion Pro Rollable Concept gaming laptop features a 16-inch display that can extend to 21.5 inches in "Tactical mode" or 24 inches in "Arena mode" with the press of a button.
The design caters to the growing popularity of ultrawide external monitors among gamers, offering a larger screen within a relatively compact laptop footprint. While the expanded screen extends beyond the laptop's housing and necessitates a thicker lid, the concept demonstrates a novel approach to increasing screen real estate on a portable gaming device.
Luke Larsen, a tech reviewer, noted the unconventional nature of the design, stating, "Lets be real: a screen much wider than the laptop housing it looks wacky." However, he also acknowledged the potential appeal, adding, "But with the popularity of ultrawide external monitors for gaming, it does make a certain amount of sense. A 24-inch screen coming from the footprint of a 16-inch laptop is pretty awesome."
The rollable OLED technology allows the screen to retract into the laptop chassis, maintaining a smaller form factor when a larger display is not needed. This addresses a key challenge in the gaming laptop market, where users often desire both portability and immersive screen sizes.
Lenovo has not yet announced plans for mass production or pricing for the Legion Pro Rollable Concept. The company presented the device as an experimental product to gauge consumer interest and explore the potential of rollable display technology in gaming applications. The other rollable laptop concept introduced at CES focuses on productivity and content creation, indicating Lenovo's broader interest in this emerging display technology.
