Block Communications Inc., the family-owned company that operates The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, announced Wednesday that the newspaper would cease publication on Sunday, May 3. The closure marks the end of a newspaper with origins dating back to 1786.
The company stated it had incurred losses exceeding $350 million over the past 20 years while publishing the newspaper. In a statement, Block Communications cited financial pressures facing local journalism as the reason continued cash losses at this scale were no longer sustainable. The company also pointed to recent court decisions that would require The Post-Gazette to operate under the terms of a 2014 labor contract, which it described as imposing outdated and inflexible operational practices.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's closure will not affect The Toledo Blade in Ohio, which is also owned by Block Communications. The company is based in Toledo.
