Families are reeling after revelations that a Swiss ski bar, Le Constellation, was not inspected for safety in five years. The New Year's Eve fire at the Crans-Montana bar killed 40 and injured 116. Officials admitted the lapse in safety checks.
The fire is believed to have started when champagne sparklers ignited soundproofing foam. The incident occurred on December 31st. The bar managers, Jacques and Jessica Moretti, are under criminal investigation for manslaughter, bodily harm, and arson by negligence. They are not currently in custody.
Lawyers representing the victims' families are demanding accountability. Romain Jordan, a family representative, questioned the municipality's role. He cited "staggering" inspection breaches.
Le Constellation, like other venues, is subject to regular safety inspections. The last inspection occurred five years prior to the deadly fire. The lack of oversight is now a central point of the investigation.
Prosecutors will continue to investigate the cause of the fire and the negligence claims. The Morettis pledged full cooperation. The investigation will also examine the municipality's inspection protocols.
