Venezuela's interim leader, Delcy Rodríguez, sacked the general in charge of Nicolás Maduro's presidential honor guard. The move came days after US forces seized Maduro in Caracas. He was taken to New York to face narco-terrorism charges. Javier Marcano Tábata was the commander replaced.
Rodríguez, formerly Maduro's vice-president, was sworn in by the National Assembly on Monday. The Assembly is largely composed of government loyalists. The presidential honor guard provides bodyguards for the head of state.
The Venezuelan government has not released casualty figures. However, members of the guard are believed to be among those killed in the US operation. US President Donald Trump stated the US would "run" Venezuela following Maduro's capture.
The National Assembly appointed Rodríguez interim president. She is considered a close ally of Maduro. The future of Venezuela's leadership remains uncertain.
