Waymo is rebranding its Zeekr RT robotaxi, renaming it "Ojai" before its integration into Waymo's commercial fleet. The company announced the change, explaining that the U.S. public is largely unfamiliar with the Zeekr brand.
The Ojai, named after a village in the Topatopa Mountains near Los Angeles, is designed to appeal to riders with a focus on wellness and community. According to Waymo spokesperson Chris Bonelli, the rebranding aims to improve user experience and recognition. The robotaxi is even expected to greet passengers with "Oh hi" followed by their name, adding a personalized touch.
Waymo partnered with Zeekr, owned by Geely Holding Group, in 2021 to develop the purpose-built robotaxi. A concept vehicle was unveiled in Los Angeles in 2022, showcasing Zeekr's SEA-M architecture, which is designed for robotaxis and logistics vehicles. This architecture provides a foundation for future mobility solutions.
The decision to rebrand also comes as Waymo navigates the competitive landscape of autonomous vehicles in the U.S., where brand recognition and consumer trust are critical. Ditching the name of a Chinese automaker may also help to avoid potential market resistance.
The Ojai is expected to join Waymo's commercial fleet soon, marking a step forward in the company's efforts to expand its autonomous ride-hailing services. The company has spent the last three years refining and testing the vehicle.
