Stan Wawrinka has been granted a wildcard entry into the Australian Open as he prepares for his final season on the professional tennis circuit, while Nick Kyrgios will not participate. Wawrinka, a three-time Grand Slam champion, announced in December his intention to retire from the sport in 2026.
The 40-year-old Wawrinka, currently ranked 156th globally, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to compete in Melbourne. "Winning the Australian Open in 2014, my first Grand Slam title, is an absolute career highlight for me, so I'm incredibly grateful to receive this wildcard," Wawrinka stated. "To have the chance to play the Australian Open at the beginning of my final year on tour means the world to me." He secured his most recent title in Geneva in 2017.
Kyrgios, a former Wimbledon finalist, cited a lack of readiness for five-set matches as the reason for his withdrawal from the competition. The 30-year-old, whose ranking has dropped to 670th, indicated he preferred the wildcard be given to a more prepared player. "I'd rather give my spot to someone ready to make it count," Kyrgios said.
Wawrinka's acceptance of the wildcard marks a significant moment in his career, allowing him to return to the site of his first Grand Slam victory. His participation adds a narrative of experience and legacy to the tournament. Kyrgios' absence, on the other hand, highlights the physical demands of professional tennis and the importance of being fully fit for major competitions.
The Australian Open is scheduled to take place in January. Further announcements regarding the tournament draw and schedule are expected in the coming weeks.
