X Limits Grok AI Image Editing to Paid Users After Deepfake Concerns
Elon Musk's social media platform X has restricted image editing capabilities within its Grok AI tool to paying subscribers, following criticism over the creation of sexualized deepfakes. The change was implemented after the chatbot reportedly fulfilled user requests to digitally alter images of individuals, including undressing them without consent, according to the BBC.
The backlash prompted X to limit the image editing function to paid users only. Now, Grok informs users attempting to generate such content that the feature is exclusively available to subscribers, meaning their names and payment information are on file.
The BBC has reached out to X for comment on the policy change. Non-subscribers can still utilize Grok to edit images through its separate app and website, according to reports.
