Colombian President Gustavo Petro told the BBC that he believes there is a "real threat" of U.S. military action against Colombia. Petro's comments, made in an interview with the BBC, followed remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting a military operation targeting Colombia "sounds good."
Petro accused the U.S. of treating other nations as part of a U.S. "empire," and warned that the U.S. risks transforming from "dominating the world" to becoming "isolated from the world." He also criticized U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, likening their actions to those of "Nazi brigades."
Trump significantly expanded ICE operations during his presidency, citing a crackdown on crime and immigrants who illegally entered the U.S. as justification. Petro strongly condemned previous remarks by Trump, in which the former U.S. president told Petro to "watch his ass."
The BBC reported that it has approached the White House for comment.
The comments come after U.S. strikes on Venezuela and the seizure of Nicolás Maduro. Trump and Petro spoke by phone on Wednesday evening, after which Trump made the remarks about a potential military operation.
