UK Government Condemns Elon Musk's X Over Grok AI Image Editing Restrictions
The UK government has criticized Elon Musk's social media platform X for limiting Grok AI image editing capabilities, particularly the ability to digitally alter images in a way that could be used for misogyny and sexual violence, to paid users only. Downing Street, speaking on Friday, described the move as "insulting" to victims.
The government's statement followed significant backlash after Grok was found to be capable of digitally altering images of individuals, including undressing them. X has since restricted this specific function to users who pay a monthly fee. According to Downing Street, this decision "simply turns an AI feature that allows the creation of unlawful images into a premium service."
However, concerns remain as the restrictions do not extend to Grok's "edit image" functionality, separate app, or website, meaning the capability to create such images is still accessible through other means. The BBC has reached out to X for comment on the matter.
