The UK government has criticized Elon Musk's platform X for changes made to its AI image editing tool, Grok, calling them "insulting" to victims of misogyny and sexual violence. Downing Street stated on Friday that limiting Grok's ability to digitally alter images, specifically undressing individuals, to paid users effectively turns "an AI feature that allows the creation of unlawful images into a premium service."
The criticism follows significant backlash after Grok was found to be digitally altering images of people by undressing them. While X has stated that this specific function is now restricted to users who pay a monthly fee, the UK government noted that no such restrictions apply when accessing Grok through its "edit image" functionality, separate app, or website.
The Prime Minister's official spokesperson commented on the matter, highlighting the government's concern over the accessibility of this feature. The BBC has reached out to X for comment on the situation.
