Swiss Bar Owner Detained After Deadly New Year's Eve Fire
CRANS-MONTANA, Switzerland – One of the co-owners of a Swiss ski resort bar was detained following a New Year's Eve fire that killed 40 people and injured 116, many of whom were under the age of 20. Swiss prosecutors identified the detained individual as Jacques Moretti, a French national and co-owner of Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana.
Moretti and his wife, Jessica, also a French national and co-owner, are suspected of manslaughter by negligence, bodily harm by negligence, and arson by negligence, according to Swiss prosecutors. Moretti was considered a potential flight risk, leading to his detention.
The fire at Le Constellation bar is believed to have been started by sparklers in champagne bottles that ignited flammable materials. The incident has raised concerns about safety regulations and the potential role of AI-powered safety monitoring systems in preventing such tragedies.
The investigation is ongoing.
