Swiss Bar Owner Detained After Deadly New Year's Eve Fire
Crans-Montana, Switzerland – Jacques Moretti, co-owner of Le Constellation bar in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana, was taken into custody following a New Year's Eve fire that killed 40 people and injured 116, many of whom were under the age of 20. Swiss prosecutors detained Moretti, a French national, due to concerns he was a potential flight risk.
Moretti and his wife, Jessica, also a French national and co-owner of the bar, are suspected of manslaughter by negligence, bodily harm by negligence, and arson by negligence, according to Swiss prosecutors. The fire at Le Constellation bar is believed to have been started by sparklers used in champagne bottles, which ignited flammable materials.
The investigation is focusing on potential negligence, including the possibility of a lack of recent safety checks at the establishment. The incident has also raised questions about the role of AI-powered safety monitoring systems in preventing such tragedies.
