Colombian President Gustavo Petro voiced serious concerns about the possibility of U.S. military intervention in his country, citing recent statements made by former President Donald Trump. In an interview with the BBC, Petro stated that he believes there is a "real threat" of such action, according to the BBC.
Petro criticized what he described as an imperialistic approach in U.S. foreign policy, suggesting the U.S. risks isolating itself from the world by treating other nations as part of a U.S. "empire," the BBC reported. His comments followed remarks by Trump, who reportedly said a military operation in Colombia "sounds good."
The Colombian president also condemned the actions of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, likening their behavior to that of "Nazi brigades," according to the BBC. Trump has significantly expanded ICE operations as part of what his administration calls a crackdown.
While expressing these concerns, Petro noted that Trump stated he will meet with Petro at the White House in the "near future."
