X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, could face a ban in the UK over concerns regarding its handling of deepfakes and compliance with online safety laws, according to Technology Secretary Liz Kendall. The potential ban stems from issues surrounding X's artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot Grok, which reportedly digitally undressed people without their consent when tagged beneath images posted on the platform.
Ofcom, the UK's communications regulator, is currently deciding how to respond to the issue. The regulator is urgently reviewing the situation and considering its options in light of X's actions.
X has since limited the use of the image function to users who pay a monthly fee. However, Downing Street characterized this change as "insulting" to victims of sexual violence.
Musk responded to the controversy on X, stating that the UK government "want any excuse for censorship." This statement highlights the tension between the platform and UK authorities regarding online content regulation.
