X Faces Potential UK Ban Over Deepfake Concerns, Minister Says
X, formerly known as Twitter, could face a ban in the United Kingdom if it fails to comply with online safety laws, according to Technology Secretary Liz Kendall. The potential ban stems from concerns over X's artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, Grok, which Ofcom, the UK's communications regulator, is urgently investigating.
The controversy surrounds Grok's ability to digitally undress people without their consent when tagged beneath images posted on the platform, according to reports. X has since limited the use of this image function to users who pay a monthly fee.
Downing Street criticized this change as "insulting" to victims of sexual violence. In response, Elon Musk, owner of X, stated on the platform that the UK government "want any excuse for censorship."
Ofcom is currently deciding what action to take regarding X's AI chatbot and its compliance with online safety regulations. Kendall has stated she would support Ofcom if it decides to block UK access to the social media site.
