X Could Face UK Ban Over Deepfakes, Minister Says
London - X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, could face a ban in the United Kingdom over concerns about its handling of deepfakes and compliance with online safety laws, according to Technology Secretary Liz Kendall. The potential ban stems from issues surrounding X's artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, Grok, which Ofcom, the UK's communications regulator, is urgently investigating.
Ofcom's investigation focuses on Grok's function that digitally undressed people without their consent when they were tagged beneath images posted on the platform. X has since limited the use of this image function to users who pay a monthly fee.
Downing Street criticized X's response, calling the move "insulting" to victims of sexual violence. The government's strong reaction underscores the severity of the concerns surrounding the platform's handling of AI-generated content and its potential impact on individuals.
In response to the potential ban, Elon Musk stated on X that the UK government "want any excuse for censorship." His comment highlights the ongoing tension between tech companies and governments regarding content moderation and freedom of speech.
Technology Secretary Liz Kendall has expressed her support for Ofcom, stating she would back the regulator if it decides to block UK access to X. Ofcom is currently deliberating on the appropriate course of action.
