A rare copy of Action Comics No. 1, featuring Superman's debut and once stolen from actor Nicolas Cage, sold for $15 million in a private sale announced Friday. The sale, brokered by Metropolis Collectibles Comic Connect, set a new record for the highest price ever paid for a comic book, surpassing the previous record of $9.12 million set in November for another copy of Superman No. 1.
The anonymous buyer acquired the comic, which had been graded a nine out of ten by the Certified Guaranty Company, a specialist in authenticating collectibles. This high grade makes it one of the best-preserved copies of the comic in existence. The broker noted that both the seller and the buyer wished to remain anonymous.
Action Comics No. 1, published in 1938, is widely regarded as the comic that defined the superhero genre. It features not only the first appearance of Superman but also several other stories. Fewer than 100 copies of the original comic are believed to still exist, contributing to its rarity and value among collectors.
The comic's history includes a stint as part of Nicolas Cage's collection before it was stolen from his home. It was recovered over a decade later and returned to the actor.
The sale highlights the enduring cultural impact and audience appeal of Superman, a character who has captivated readers for generations. The original price of the comic was just 10 cents, equivalent to about $2.25 today, making the $15 million sale a remarkable increase in value and a testament to the character's lasting legacy.
