Debt charities reported a significant surge in calls this January, indicating increased financial strain on households following the holiday season. The spike in calls highlights growing worries about unmanageable debt, with many seeking help during late-night hours, according to multiple sources.
The first weeks of January are typically the busiest for debt helplines after the expensive holiday period. This year, the demand appears to be unprecedented. Advice charity StepChange reported that Monday was busier than any single day in the previous year. Credit counselling service Money Wellness noted that a fifth of those accessing its services at the turn of the year did so between 10 PM and 3 AM.
The increased accessibility of online resources may be contributing to the surge, allowing individuals to seek assistance discreetly and at their convenience. The late-night access also suggests heightened anxiety surrounding debt management.
Dave Murphy, who is working to eliminate his own debt, urged anyone struggling to seek help, emphasizing the importance of addressing the issue before it becomes overwhelming.
The debt charities continue to provide assistance and resources to those in need, working to manage the influx of calls and offer guidance to individuals facing financial difficulties.
