Alphabet's drone delivery arm, Wing, is significantly scaling its partnership with Walmart, announcing plans to extend its on-demand drone delivery service to an additional 150 Walmart stores. This marks the second expansion of the collaboration in under a year, signaling strong customer adoption and confidence in the drone delivery model.
The rollout, which builds upon existing operations in Dallas-Fort Worth and Atlanta, is slated to occur progressively throughout this year and continue into 2027, according to Heather Rivera, Wing's new chief business officer. This expansion suggests a growing demand for rapid delivery of everyday items via drone, with Rivera noting that Wing's top 25 customers are utilizing the service an average of three times per week. Popular items ordered include groceries like eggs, ground beef, fresh produce, lunchables, and snacks.
Upon completion of this expansion, Wing will operate from over 270 Walmart stores, reaching approximately 10% of the U.S. population. This includes major metropolitan areas such as Los Angeles, St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Miami. The expansion follows a previous announcement in June 2025 regarding launches in Houston, Orlando, Tampa, and Charlotte. Wing is scheduled to begin operations in Houston on January 15.
The partnership between Wing and Walmart highlights the increasing interest in drone delivery as a viable solution for last-mile logistics. The market for drone delivery is projected to experience substantial growth in the coming years, driven by factors such as increasing e-commerce sales, demand for faster delivery times, and advancements in drone technology. Wing, backed by Alphabet's resources and technological expertise, is positioning itself as a key player in this evolving landscape.
Looking ahead, the expansion of Wing's drone delivery service has the potential to reshape consumer expectations for convenience and speed. As drone technology continues to mature and regulatory frameworks evolve, drone delivery is expected to become more widespread, impacting various sectors beyond retail, including healthcare and emergency services. Wing's strategic partnership with Walmart provides a significant platform for further innovation and market penetration in the years to come.
