A Swiss judge extended the custody of Jacques Moretti, co-owner of Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, following a deadly New Year's Eve fire. The blaze killed 40 people and injured 116. Moretti, a French national, will be detained for 90 days. Prosecutors cited flight risk as the reason for the extended custody.
Moretti and his wife, Jessica, also French, are suspected of manslaughter by negligence, bodily harm by negligence, and arson by negligence. The fire at Le Constellation bar reportedly started when sparklers on champagne bottles ignited the ceiling. Moretti was initially detained on Friday for 48 hours before Monday's extension.
The incident raises concerns about safety oversight in the popular ski resort. Authorities admitted the bar had not undergone safety checks for five years. The investigation continues. The court of coercive measures will determine the next steps in the case.
