Ofcom Investigates X Over Grok AI Sexual Deepfake Concerns
London - Ofcom, the UK's communications regulator, has launched an investigation into Elon Musk's social media platform X (formerly Twitter) over concerns that its artificial intelligence tool, Grok, is being used to create sexualized images. The investigation was prompted by "deeply concerning reports" of the chatbot being used to generate and share undressed images of individuals, as well as "sexualized images of children," according to a statement released by Ofcom.
The watchdog's investigation will focus on whether X has violated relevant laws and regulations regarding the creation and distribution of such content. If X is found to have broken the law, Ofcom has the authority to impose a fine of up to 10% of its worldwide revenue or £18 million, whichever is greater.
In response to the investigation, X referred to a statement posted by its Safety account at the beginning of January. The statement said, "Anyone using or prompting Grok to make illegal content will [be]." The full statement was not available in the source material.
The investigation is ongoing, and Ofcom has not provided a specific timeline for its completion. The outcome of the investigation could have significant implications for X and other platforms utilizing AI tools, potentially leading to stricter regulations and greater accountability for the content generated by these technologies.
