Ofcom Investigates X Over Grok AI Sexual Deepfake Concerns
London - Ofcom, the UK's communications regulator, has launched an investigation into Elon Musk's social media platform X (formerly Twitter) over concerns that its artificial intelligence tool, Grok, is being used to generate sexualized images. The investigation was prompted by "deeply concerning reports" of the chatbot being utilized to create and share undressed images of individuals, as well as "sexualized images of children," according to a statement released by Ofcom.
The watchdog's investigation will focus on whether X has violated relevant laws and regulations regarding the creation and distribution of harmful content. Should X be found in violation, Ofcom has the authority to impose a fine of up to 10% of the company's worldwide revenue or £18 million, whichever is greater.
In response to the investigation, X directed the BBC to a statement posted by its Safety account in early January. The statement read: "Anyone using or prompting Grok to make illegal content will [be dealt with]." The company did not elaborate further on specific measures being taken to prevent the misuse of Grok.
The investigation highlights the growing concerns surrounding the potential for AI tools to be exploited for malicious purposes, particularly the creation of deepfakes. Ofcom's action underscores the increasing scrutiny of social media platforms and their responsibility to safeguard users from harmful content generated by AI. The outcome of the investigation could have significant implications for X and other companies developing and deploying AI technologies.
