Venezuela released at least 116 political prisoners. The announcement came Monday from Venezuela's Ministry of Penitentiary Services. The releases occurred in the past few hours, following a similar release days prior. Those freed were arrested during Nicolas Maduro's presidency.
The prisoners were accused of disrupting constitutional order and undermining national stability. Two Italian citizens were among those released. Italy's Foreign Minister has yet to comment.
The releases occurred nine days after the United States abducted Maduro. The location of the releases was near Caracas, specifically outside El Rodeo I prison in Guatire, Miranda State.
The political climate in Venezuela remains tense. The US action against Maduro has further destabilized the region. The future of Venezuela's leadership remains uncertain. Further releases or political developments are anticipated.
