A referee and a student are among hundreds reportedly killed in Iran during two weeks of anti-government protests. Coach Amir Mohammad Koohkan, 26, a referee, died on January 3 after being shot with live ammunition in Neyriz. Student Rubina Aminian, 23, was shot from behind in Tehran on January 8.
The protests began December 28 over economic grievances. A US-based rights group reports nearly 500 protesters and 48 security personnel have died. Sources inside Iran suggest the death toll is likely higher.
Funerals for those killed are taking place amid heightened tensions. Mourners were heard chanting "death to Khamenei" at one funeral. The killings have sparked outrage and intensified calls for accountability.
The demonstrations initially focused on the economy but quickly evolved into broader protests against the Iranian government. These are some of the largest protests seen in Iran in recent years.
Further protests are expected. International pressure on Iran to address the situation is mounting. Investigations into the deaths are demanded by human rights organizations.
