Swiss Ski Bar Owner's Custody Extended After Deadly Fire
A Swiss judge extended the detention of Jacques Moretti, co-owner of Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, for 90 days following a New Year's Eve fire that killed 40 people and injured 116 others. The blaze at the ski resort bar, which occurred on December 31st, primarily impacted individuals under the age of 20, according to BBC World.
Moretti, a French national, and his wife Jessica, also French, are suspected of manslaughter by negligence, bodily harm by negligence, and arson by negligence. Swiss prosecutors argued that Jacques Moretti is a potential flight risk, justifying the extended custody.
The investigation is ongoing, focusing on potential safety lapses at Le Constellation bar. According to BBC World, the bar had not been inspected in five years. Jacques and Jessica Moretti stated they are cooperating with the investigation.
