Trump to Meet Venezuelan Opposition Leader Machado Amidst US Policy Uncertainty
Former President Donald Trump was scheduled to meet with Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado on Thursday, according to the White House. The meeting occurred in the wake of Nicolás Maduro's ouster by U.S. forces in Caracas.
The meeting took place amidst uncertainty regarding U.S. policy and leadership preferences in Venezuela. While Machado's movement claimed victory in the widely contested 2024 elections, the U.S. has not endorsed her as the new leader. Instead, the U.S. backed Delcy Rodríguez, Maduro's former vice-president.
Machado sought to personally thank Trump for the action against Maduro. She also hoped to offer him her Nobel Peace Prize. Trump called the potential gift "a great honour." However, the offer was complicated by the prize's non-transferable nature and Trump's past displeasure with Machado's Nobel win and perceived lack of domestic support.
