Trump to Meet Venezuelan Opposition Leader Machado Amidst US Policy Uncertainty
Former President Donald Trump was scheduled to meet with Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado on Thursday at the White House, according to the White House. The meeting occurred in the wake of Nicolás Maduro's ouster by U.S. forces in Caracas.
Machado, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, sought to personally thank Trump for the U.S. action against Maduro. She also intended to offer him her Nobel Peace Prize, an offer complicated by the prize's non-transferable nature.
The meeting took place amidst uncertainty regarding U.S. policy and leadership preferences in Venezuela. Despite Machado's movement claiming victory in the widely contested 2024 elections, Trump had declined to endorse her as the new leader. Instead, the U.S. backed Delcy Rodríguez, Maduro's former vice-president.
Trump called Machado's offer of the Nobel Prize "a great honour." However, the meeting was also colored by Trump's past displeasure with Machado's Nobel win and perceived lack of domestic support.
