X Faces Potential Loss of Self-Regulation Over AI Chatbot Concerns, Says Starmer
London - X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, could lose its right to self-regulation in the UK, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer warned on Monday, amid growing concerns over the platform's Grok AI chatbot. Starmer's warning comes as the UK government prepares to introduce legislation to criminalize the creation of non-consensual intimate images and the provision of online tools used to generate them.
Speaking to Labour MPs, Starmer stated that the government would act swiftly if X fails to control Grok. "If X cannot control Grok, we will," he said, signaling a firm stance on the issue. The proposed legislation is a direct response to widespread anxieties surrounding the potential misuse of AI technologies like Grok.
The BBC has reached out to X for comment. In a previous statement, X said that "Anyone using or prompting Grok to make illegal content will suffer the same consequences as if they upload illegal content."
The impending law and Starmer's comments highlight the increasing pressure on social media platforms to effectively moderate AI-generated content and prevent its use for malicious purposes. The situation remains fluid, and the potential consequences for X's operational autonomy in the UK are significant.
