X Faces Potential Regulation Over AI Chatbot Grok
London - X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, could face stricter regulation in the United Kingdom if it fails to control its Grok AI chatbot, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer warned on Monday. The warning comes amid widespread concerns about the potential for Grok to generate non-consensual intimate images.
Starmer, speaking to Labour MPs, stated that X could lose its "right to self regulate" if the platform does not address the issue. "If X cannot control Grok, we will," he said, indicating that the government is prepared to intervene swiftly.
The government is also planning to introduce legislation that would make it illegal to supply online tools used to create such images. This move aims to prevent the proliferation of AI-generated abuse material.
The BBC has reached out to X for comment. The platform previously stated that "Anyone using or prompting Grok to make illegal content will suffer the same consequences as if they upload illegal content."
The UK's move to regulate X comes as governments worldwide grapple with the challenges posed by rapidly advancing AI technology and its potential for misuse. The proposed legislation and Starmer's warning signal a growing willingness to hold tech companies accountable for the content generated on their platforms.
