Russia launched new attacks on Ukraine Tuesday, January 13, targeting Kharkiv and Kyiv. At least two were killed and three injured in Kharkiv, according to Regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported a missile attack on the capital, prompting deployment of air defenses.
Kharkiv was struck early Tuesday. Kyiv residents were urged to take cover by Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's military administration. Russian drones also hit two foreign-flagged vessels in the Black Sea, confirmed Deputy Prime Minister Oleksii Kuleba. The ships sailed under the flags of Panama and San Marino. One person was injured in the Black Sea attack. This marks the second attack on Black Sea shipping in four days.
Ukraine's energy infrastructure was also targeted. President Zelenskyy warned of major new Russian offensives. The attacks disrupted daily life and raised concerns about energy security.
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine began in 2014, escalating significantly in February 2022. International efforts to mediate a ceasefire continue. Further attacks are anticipated, raising fears of increased casualties and infrastructure damage.
