Anthropic has launched Cowork, a new feature designed to extend the capabilities of its Claude AI assistant to general office tasks. Built upon the same technology as Claude Code, which gained popularity among software developers, Cowork is integrated into the macOS Claude desktop application and allows users to grant Claude access to specific folders on their computers. This access enables users to provide plain language instructions for a variety of tasks, such as generating expense reports from receipt images, compiling reports from digital notes, and reorganizing files.

The company aims to make AI-driven task management accessible to a broader audience, including those without technical expertise. According to Anthropic, Cowork is designed to be user-friendly, allowing "any knowledge worker—from developers to marketers" to quickly leverage its capabilities.

Cowork represents a significant step in the evolution of AI-powered tools for the workplace. While Claude Code offered similar functionalities, its technical requirements may have limited its adoption among non-technical users. Cowork simplifies the process, making it easier for individuals to delegate routine tasks to AI.

The underlying technology relies on advancements in large language models (LLMs), which are trained on vast amounts of data to understand and generate human-like text.
