Trump to Meet Venezuelan Opposition Leader Machado Amidst US Policy Uncertainty
Former President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado on Thursday at the White House, according to the White House. The meeting occurs in the wake of Nicolás Maduro's removal from power by U.S. forces in Caracas.
Machado, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, seeks to personally thank Trump for the U.S. action against Maduro. She also intends to offer him her Nobel Peace Prize, an offer complicated by the prize's non-transferable nature. Trump called the offer "a great honour."
Despite Machado's movement claiming victory in the widely contested 2024 elections, the U.S. has not endorsed her as the new leader of Venezuela. Instead, the U.S. is backing Delcy Rodríguez, Maduro's former vice-president. This decision has created uncertainty regarding U.S. policy and leadership preferences in Venezuela.
The meeting comes amidst questions regarding Trump's past displeasure with Machado's Nobel win and perceived lack of domestic support. The meeting's outcome could provide insights into the future direction of U.S.-Venezuela relations.
