Trump to Meet Venezuela's María Corina Machado Amid US Stance on Leadership
Former President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado on Thursday at the White House, according to the BBC. The meeting follows the ouster of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by U.S. forces in Caracas weeks prior.
Despite Machado's movement claiming victory in Venezuela's widely contested 2024 elections, the U.S. has not endorsed her as the new leader. Instead, the U.S. is backing Delcy Rodríguez, Maduro's former vice-president, according to BBC sources.
Machado said last week that she hopes to thank Trump personally for the action against Maduro. She also intends to offer him her Nobel Peace Prize, an offer complicated by the prize's non-transferable nature. Trump called the potential gift "a great honour," according to the BBC.
The meeting comes amidst uncertainty regarding U.S. policy and leadership preferences in Venezuela. It also follows reports of Trump's past displeasure with Machado's Nobel win and perceived lack of domestic support, according to BBC sources.
