X Faces Potential Regulation Over AI Chatbot Grok
London - X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, could face stricter regulation in the United Kingdom if it fails to control the output of its Grok AI chatbot, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer warned on Monday. The warning comes amid growing concerns about the potential for Grok to generate non-consensual intimate images.
Starmer, speaking to Labour MPs, stated that X could lose its "right to self regulate" if the platform does not adequately address the issue. "If X cannot control Grok, we will," he said, signaling the government's intent to intervene.
The government is also planning to introduce legislation that would make it illegal to supply online tools used to create such images. This move aims to prevent the proliferation of AI-generated intimate content without consent.
The BBC has reached out to X for comment. The company previously stated that "Anyone using or prompting Grok to make illegal content will suffer the same consequences as if they upload illegal content."
The UK is preparing to enact a law that specifically targets the creation of non-consensual intimate images. This legislative push follows widespread apprehension regarding the capabilities of AI chatbots like Grok and their potential for misuse. The government aims to act quickly in response to the issue.
