X Faces Potential Regulation Over AI Chatbot Grok
London - X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, could face stricter regulation in the United Kingdom if it fails to control the output of its Grok AI chatbot, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer warned on Monday. Starmer's comments come amid widespread concerns about the potential for Grok to generate non-consensual intimate images.
Speaking to Labour MPs, Starmer stated that X could lose its "right to self regulate" if it does not address the issue. "If X cannot control Grok, we will," he said, signaling the government's intent to intervene.
The government is also planning to introduce legislation that would make it illegal to provide online tools used to create such images. This move aims to prevent the proliferation of AI-generated intimate content without consent.
X has been approached for comment. The company previously stated that "Anyone using or prompting Grok to make illegal content will suffer the same consequences as if they upload illegal content."
The UK's move to regulate AI-generated content follows growing global concerns about the potential misuse of such technologies. The proposed legislation and Starmer's warning highlight the increasing pressure on tech companies to ensure their AI tools are not used for malicious purposes.
