Scott Adams, the creator of the globally syndicated comic strip Dilbert, died of cancer at age 68. His ex-wife, Shelly Miles, announced his death on Tuesday during a live stream of his podcast, Real Coffee with Scott Adams.
Adams launched Dilbert in 1989. The cartoon, focused on a frustrated engineer navigating a dysfunctional workplace, appeared in over 2,000 newspapers across 65 countries. Dilbert expanded into books, an animated TV series, and a video game.
In 2023, several newspapers, including the Washington Post, dropped Dilbert. This followed accusations of racist comments Adams made regarding black Americans. He described black Americans as a "hate group" and advised white people to "get the hell away from black people." Adams defended his statements as hyperbole.
The impact on the cartooning and satire community remains to be seen. No immediate plans regarding his intellectual property have been released.
