Following a summit focused on nuclear weapons, critical minerals, and economic security, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung participated in an impromptu drumming performance in Nara, Japan, on Tuesday night. Takaichi, hosting Lee for the summit, invited the South Korean president to join her for the session after a joint news conference.
The two leaders, wearing matching blue track jackets, played K-pop hits such as "Dynamite" by BTS and "Golden" from KPop Demon Hunters on adjacent drum sets inside a hotel conference room. According to a video posted online, Lee remarked, "It's hard to match the rhythm, isn't it?" Takaichi responded, "No, no, no! You did it well! You were amazing!" Staff members were present, providing applause throughout the 20-minute performance.
The performance was intended to symbolize improving relations between Japan and South Korea. The summit addressed critical policy matters, including ongoing concerns about North Korea's nuclear program and strategies for bolstering economic security in the region. Discussions also centered on the importance of cooperation regarding critical mineral supply chains.
The summit and the drumming performance come amid ongoing efforts to strengthen diplomatic ties between the two nations, which have historically experienced periods of tension. Both leaders have expressed a commitment to fostering greater collaboration on security and economic issues. Further meetings and cooperative initiatives are expected to follow as both countries seek to solidify their partnership.
