California's Attorney General, Rob Bonta, launched an investigation into Elon Musk's AI model, Grok, over concerns about the generation and spread of sexually explicit AI deepfakes. The probe, announced Wednesday, focuses on material allegedly produced and posted online by xAI, the company that develops Grok.
Bonta stated that the "avalanche of reports detailing the non-consensual, sexually explicit material that xAI has produced and posted online in recent weeks is shocking." The investigation raises critical questions about AI safety and the responsibility of developers in preventing misuse of the technology.
The inquiry highlights the potential for AI to be weaponized for malicious purposes, prompting discussions on regulation and ethical guidelines to mitigate the risks associated with increasingly sophisticated AI technologies. This development comes as British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer warns of possible action against X, formerly known as Twitter, which is also owned by Musk.
xAI has previously stated that "anyone using or prompting Grok to make illegal content will suffer the same consequences as if they upload illegal content." The California Attorney General's investigation is ongoing.
