At least 32 people died in Thailand after a crane collapsed on a passenger train. The accident occurred in Nakhon Ratchasima province, northeast of Bangkok. The train derailed as a result of the collapse.
The incident happened around 9 am local time. A crane in use on a high-speed rail project struck the passing train. The train was traveling from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani province. Footage showed the crane's broken structure resting on concrete pillars. Smoke billowed from the train wreckage.
Rescuers worked to free passengers from the tilted carriages. Sixty-four people were injured. The metal from the crane sliced the second carriage in half.
The crane was part of a high-speed rail project. This project aimed to improve transportation infrastructure in Thailand.
Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the crane collapse. Authorities will assess the safety protocols of the rail project. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
