The first-person shooter genre, since its inception with titles like "Wolfenstein 3D" and "Doom," has seen a vast expansion, but "Oddcore," a new Early Access roguelike boomer shooter, offers a return to simpler pleasures: shooting hordes of bizarre creatures in surreal environments. The game, developed by Oddcorp, distinguishes itself from more elaborate and serious shooters with its fast-paced action, semi-randomized levels, and a balanced risk-reward upgrade system.
The game's design encourages short, intense play sessions, proving difficult to put down, according to early player reviews. "The combination of frenetic, quick-moving action, semi-randomized scenarios, and well-balanced riskreward upgrade system makes for a pick-up-and-play shooter that I find myself struggling not to pick up and play for a few more quick-hit sessions even as I write this," one player noted.
"Oddcore" harkens back to the roots of the FPS genre, prioritizing immediate, visceral gameplay over complex narratives or strategic depth, reminiscent of the arcade-style shooters of the 1990s. The game begins with a minimal narrative setup, quickly throwing players into the action.
Currently available in Early Access, "Oddcore" is still under development, with Oddcorp planning to incorporate player feedback and add new features as development progresses. The game is available for purchase and download on major online platforms.
