The number of passengers passing through UK airports is projected to be the highest ever recorded on a Christmas Eve since 1972, according to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). The CAA estimates that over 335,000 people will fly in the UK on Wednesday, a 5% increase from Christmas Eve in 2024.
While air travel is expected to reach record levels, minimal disruption is anticipated, the CAA said. Road travel is also predicted to be heavy. The RAC anticipates one of the busiest Christmas Eves on record for Britain's roads, although another motoring organization suggests the peak traffic period has already passed. The RAC advises that the worst time to travel by car on Wednesday is between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., as millions travel home before Christmas Day on Thursday, potentially causing delays on major routes.
Manchester Airport anticipates approximately 75,000 passengers will travel through the airport on Christmas Eve, with 208 flights departing. The airport expects passenger numbers to halve on Christmas Day. Amsterdam, Paris, and Dublin are the most popular destinations from Manchester on Christmas Eve. Heathrow Airport expects its busiest December period ever, with 152,000 passengers using the airport on Christmas Day. EasyJet reported 558 flights scheduled.
The increase in air travel highlights the ongoing demand for air travel during the holiday season. The CAA's projections are based on historical data and current booking trends. The aviation industry continues to adapt to evolving travel patterns and technological advancements to manage passenger flow and minimize disruptions.
