Syrian forces killed a senior ISIL commander in a Damascus countryside raid. The Ministry of Interior announced the death of Mohammed Shahadeh, also known as Abu Omar Shaddad, on Thursday. Shahadeh was described as ISIL's governor of Hauran and a threat to local security.
The operation occurred in al-Buweida, near Qatana, southwest of Damascus. Specialized units, acting on verified intelligence, conducted the targeted raid. The General Intelligence Directorate coordinated with the units.
Authorities claim the operation disrupted ISIL activities in the region. No immediate response from ISIL has been reported.
ISIL has maintained a presence in Syria despite territorial losses. Syrian forces continue to conduct operations against the group.
Further security measures are expected in the Damascus area. Authorities will likely increase surveillance and patrols.
