Mamdani Makes History: Sworn in as NYC Mayor with Quran
Drawing from multiple news sources, Zohran Mamdani made history as the first Muslim and South Asian mayor of New York City, using a Quran for his private swearing-in ceremony, including a 200-year-old copy on loan from the New York Public Library. The historic Quran belonged to Arturo Schomburg, a Black historian and key figure in the Harlem Renaissance, whose collection formed the basis of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.
